Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch dōresoeken (Dutch doorzoeken ), Middle Low German dörchsȫken , Old High German duruhsuohen (Middle High German durchsuochen , German durchsuchen ) < the Germanic base of through- prefix + the Germanic base of seek v. With the β. forms compare thorough- prefix.
Obsolete.
1. transitive. To search (a place) thoroughly. Also: to scrutinize, make a thorough examination of (something, esp. a person's soul, deeds, etc.). Cf. seek v. 10.In quot. OE at α. : to search thoroughly for (something).
