Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin titanos.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin titanos kind of stone used in alchemy (14th cent. or earlier) < Arabic ṭīṭānūs kind of stone used in alchemy (10th cent.) < ancient Greek τίτανος lime, chalk, gypsum, of unknown origin; probably a loanword). Compare post-classical Latin titanos lime, chalk (5th–6th cent.), which is directly < the ancient Greek form.Quot. c1405 is based on a 14th-cent. Latin alchemical text first published as Senioris Zadith Tabula Chemica, itself a translation of a 10th-cent. Arabic text by Muhammad ibn Umail (see D. Melitzki Matter of Araby in Medieval England (1977) 86), in which titanos is described as having many names and diverse colours, and appears to be identified with magnesia.

A mineral formerly believed to be an ingredient of the philosopher's stone and usually identified with magnesia (magnesia n. 1a).Although usually (following Chaucer's use) identified with magnesia, quot. 1584 appears to make a distinction between the two, while modern writers have variously identified titanos as calx, lime, or chalk.
