Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic budhaigir, also (reportedly St Kilda) †buigire, of uncertain origin, perhaps < early Scandinavian, although no likely etymon has been identified.A possible relationship with Faroese †bugari stormy petrel (18th cent. in an isolated attestation) has been suggested, but the origin of this is also uncertain; it has been interpreted as reflecting a local (Suðurøy) pronunciation of bukari, literally ‘knocker’ (perhaps as a taboo avoidance word), which would be unlikely to underlie the Scottish Gaelic word for phonological reasons.
