单词 to go in equipage
释义

> as lemmas

to go (also march, walk) in equipage
to go (also march, walk) in equipage: the original sense was probably ‘to walk in military array with’ (cf. sense 2); but in our examples (all figurative) the sense is ‘to keep step with’, so that the noun becomes synonymous with equipace n. Hence the word equipage was in 17th cent. often supposed to be formed with the prefix equi-, and in many passages it occurs in the sense: Equality of position, rank, or importance.
