Etymology: < bride n.1 + clothes n.Compare Middle Dutch bruutcleet (compare Dutch bruidskleed ), Middle Low German brūtklēt , German Brautkleid (14th cent. as brutekleid ), all in the sense ‘wedding dress’. Compare Old English brȳdrēaf and rēaf brȳdlic , both in sense ‘wedding garment’ in the same context as quot. c1384 at sense 1 (see discussion at bridely adj.).
Now archaic.
