1. Originally: a man who is chosen to act as an attendant of the bridegroom at a wedding, and who performs various ceremonial duties for him; a groomsman. Now usually: a male attendant of a bride. Also figurative.Often a young unmarried man, and sometimes (esp. in early use) one of a number of such men at a given wedding. Cf. bride-leader n. at bride n.1 Compounds 1b, best man n.The sense in quot. 1614 at α. is unclear: the plural form suggests this sense, but a later edition of the same text uses the word in the sense ‘bridegroom’ (see quot. 1623 at sense 2α. ).
