单词 aeviternal
释义

aeviternaladj.

Brit. /ˌiːvᵻˈtəːnl/, U.S. /ˌivəˈtərn(ə)l/
Forms: 1500s–1600s eviternall, 1600s aeviternall, 1600s euiternal, 1600s euiternall, 1600s– aeviternal, 1600s– eviternal.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin aeviternus , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin aeviternus ( < aevum aevum n. + -ternus , suffix forming adjectives; compare the contracted form aeternus : see eterne adj.) + -al suffix1. Compare Middle French éviternel (1578), and also eviterne (third quarter of the 15th cent.), both in apparently isolated attestations. Compare earlier eternal adj.In classical Latin aeviternus is a form reported by grammarians (e.g. Varro) as synonymous with aeternus. In post-classical Latin aeviternus (owing to its more obvious connection with the etymon aevum) was sometimes used to express eternity of duration (from 13th cent. in British sources), as contrasted with the notion of timelessness expressed by aeternus.
Everlasting, endless, eternal (esp. with reference to future duration).Johnson's explanation (see quot. 1755) is not supported by the evidence.
