The word does not appear (in either form) in Barbot's French journal of his voyage to the region, one of the sources of the printed texts.

Chiefly in West Africa: palm wine made by fermenting the sap of the bamboo palm, Raphia vinifera; the sap itself as collected for drinking or fermentation (rare). Also (in full tombo palm, tombo tree): the palm tree producing such sap.
