Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a borrowing from a West African language.
Etymology: Of uncertain origin; probably < a West African language.The origin of the form tombe is unclear; it appears several times in the work cited in quot. a1712, which was apparently written in English by the Frenchman J. Barbot; a later French version of the same text (1748) has tombo in the corresponding passages. The word does not appear (in either form) in Barbot's French journal of his voyage to the region, one of the sources of the printed texts.
Chiefly in West Africa: palm wine made by fermenting the sap of the bamboo palm, Raphia vinifera; the sap itself as collected for drinking or fermentation (rare). Also (in full tombo palm, tombo tree): the palm tree producing such sap.
