Etymology: < the male forename Tom (see Tom n.1, and compare sense 4a at that entry) + cat n.1 With sense A. 2 and the use as adjective compare slightly later tomcatting n.Probably originating in the use of Tom as a conventional or generic name for a cat (attested from at least the mid 18th cent.), perhaps popularized by the publication in 1760 of an anonymous work ‘The Life and Adventures of a Cat’, the hero of which, a male cat, bore the name of Tom, and is commonly mentioned as ‘Tom the Cat’.
