A native or inhabitant of Transkei, a region situated on the east coast of South Africa to the north-east of the River Kei; spec. (under apartheid) a citizen of the Republic of Transkei (1976–94) (now historical).In 1976 Transkei was declared a Xhosa homeland (homeland n. 3) as the Republic of Transkei, the first of several such ethnically based territories to be given limited independence by the National Party government under the apartheid policy of ‘separate development’ (separate development n. at separate adj. 3g). The territory was reincorporated into South Africa in 1994 as part of the Eastern Cape province.
