Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French travers.
Etymology: < French travers traverse n.; compare the specific equestrian sense of the corresponding verb traverser to advance with the hindquarters at an angle (see traverse v. 17). Compare renvers n.
Horse Riding (chiefly Dressage).
A movement or exercise in which a horse advances with its body at an oblique angle, the shoulders being to one side and the hindquarters to the other; spec. a dressage movement in which the horse advances parallel to the side of the arena while maintaining such a position, the head and forequarters being closer to the wall and facing straight ahead, while the hindquarters are angled into the arena (cf. renvers n.); (also) the position in which such a movement is executed. Cf. traverse v. 17.
