Etymology: < Spanish tragalismo (1822 or earlier; now historical; < trágala satirical Constitutionalist song (1821 or earlier) + -ismo -ism suffix), with remodelling of the ending after -ism suffix. Compare Spanish (now hist.) tragalista person who supported the liberal party which governed Spain from 1820–3 (1821 or earlier).Spanish trágala is a use as noun of trágala ‘swallow it!’ < traga , 2nd person singular imperative of tragar to swallow (13th cent.; further etymology uncertain and disputed) + -la , feminine singular object pronoun (which in the song refers to the feminine noun constitución constitution n.). In Smart (1849, Suppl.), tragalism (entered with a reference to use in Q. Rev.) is explained as ‘Goatishness due to high feeding’. This interpretation, based on a supposed derivation from Byzantine Greek τραγαλισμός evening meal ( < ancient Greek τραγαλιζειν ‘to eat vegetables or fruit’, but imagined to be derived < ancient Greek τράγος he-goat: see tragus n.) has been copied (with variations) in many later dictionaries.
