Forms: α. Middle English transcrit, (Middle English traunscrit), Middle English transcrite, (1500s tancrete). β. Middle English–1600s transcripte, (1500s -scrypt), Middle English– transcript.
Etymology: < Old French transcrit (Anglo-Norman also transescrit , transecrit ) copy of a document, etc. (1221 in Godefroy) < Latin transcriptum , noun use of past participles of French transcrire , and Latin transcrībĕre to transcribe v. In 15th cent. assimilated to the Latin form transcriptum (evidenced from c1200, in English use). A worn-down French form tancrist, tanscrit (13th cent. in Godefroy), appears to be represented in 16th cent. English by tancrete (Skelton): see B.
