Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Dutch travado, travaet; Portuguese trovoada.
Etymology: < (i) early modern Dutch travado (1615), travaet (1657; Dutch travaat ), and its etymon (ii) Portuguese trovoada thunderstorm (14th cent.), use as noun of feminine past participle of trovoar to vibrate, to whirl (although this is apparently first attested later: 16th cent.) < trovão thunderstorm (13th cent.), (with metathesis) < classical Latin turbōn- , variant (in Caesar) of turbin- , turbō whirlwind (see turbo n.).Compare the following early attestation of the Portuguese word in an English context:1625 S. Purchas Pilgrimes II. vii. ii. 952 Very foule weather there with Thunder and Lightning, (which the Portugals call, Trauados).

Any of several types of storm which arise suddenly at sea or on land, characterized by strong wind and rain, often with thunder and lightning.
