Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Middle English, apparently < Old Norse brodd-r spike, shaft, spike on a plant, = Old English brord spike, point, spire, Old High German brort edge, margin (compare braird n., brerd n.), Gothic *brozds < Old Germanic *brozdo-z . There was a cognate Old Celtic brott- , whence Old Irish brot sting, prick, modern Irish and Gaelic brod , which may be the source of some of the senses. Almost exclusively northern, and mainly Scotch. Compare prod n.1
