单词 turban
释义

turbann.

/ˈtəːbən/
Forms: α. 1500s tolipane, tolepan, tolliban, tulbant, ( tal-), 1500s–1600s tuliban, tolibant, tolibante, tulipan, 1600s tulipant, tulipante, tullipant, tulliband, tul-, ( tel-) -bent, dulipan, tulban; β. 1500s torbant, turribant, turbanto, 1500s–1800s turbant, turband, 1500s–1600s turbante, turbent, 1600s turbond, turbat); γ. 1600s turben, turbine, turbane, 1500s– turban.
Etymology: Altered form of Persian dulbănd or dōlbănd, in vulgar Turkish pronounced tulbant , tul(i)pant , toli- , whence Old Italian tolipante , tolipano , modern Italian turbante , Spanish turbante , Portuguese turbante ; obsolete French tolliban (15th cent.), tulban , turbant (Cotgrave), French turban ; early modern Dutch turbant (Kilian), Dutch tulband , German, Danish, Swedish turban . It is not clear in which language the change of tul- to tur- took place; it may have been in South-West India, or in Portuguese; we find it first in Hickock's translation of Cesar Frederick, who cites it from the Portuguese Indies. Tulipant , turbant , were the most usual English forms in 17th cent.; turban was used by Johnson and Gibbon. See also tulip n., which goes back to the same word.
