Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin turdinus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin turdinus of or relating to thrushes (1684 or earlier) < classical Latin turdus thrush, also in scientific Latin as Turdus , genus name (Linnaeus 1758; < the same Indo-European base as throstle n.) + -īnus -ine suffix1. Compare scientific Latin Turdinae, subfamily name (1840 or earlier).
Ornithology.
Originally: having the form or appearance of a thrush. In later use: belonging to the family Turdidae or subfamily Turdinae, comprising the typical thrushes.
