In Kenyan and Tanzanian cookery: a light liquid food, typically eaten for breakfast, made by boiling (often fermented) millet flour or another farinaceous substance in water or milk.

1889 A. N. Wood Jrnl. 15 July in Church Missionary Intelligencer (1890) Mar. 184/2 He brought me a large pot of ‘uji’ (gruel), sweetened with honey.
1993 Kenya National Assembly Official Rec. 3 Nov. 2147/2 So, they are using jaggery to make uji for their children because their children cannot drink uji without something sweet in it.
2019 Daily Nation (Kenya) (Nexis) 16 May I visited grandma again a few years ago and she made traditional uji.
