Etymology: < Italian brunello (second half of the 19th cent. denoting the variety of grape from which the wine is made, as well as the wine itself), probably < bruno brown adj. + -ello -el suffix², with reference to the dark colour of the grape. Compare earlier Brunello di Montalcino n.Italian brunello was originally the name of the grape from which the wine is made; however, it was subsequently discovered that what was originally thought of as a different grape was in fact a Sangiovese (see Sangiovese n.).

A full-bodied red wine produced in the Montalcino region of Tuscany. Sometimes also: the Sangiovese grape from which this is made. Cf. Brunello di Montalcino n.
