Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: acid n., endure v., -ic suffix; acid n., Latin dūrāre , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < acid n. + -dur- (in either endure v. or classical Latin dūrāre dure v.) + -ic suffix. Compare earlier acidophilic adj.Apparently coined by A. M. Day (compare also quot. 1910):1910 A. I. Kendall in Jrnl. Med. Res. 22 166 The writer is indebted to Miss Anne Marjory Day for the coining of this word.
Microbiology.
Of bacteria: tolerant of an acidic environment, acidophilic; relating to or involving such tolerance.

1910 A. I. Kendall in Jrnl. Med. Res. 22 155 The writer proposes the name ‘aciduric’ in place of ‘acidophilic’ as the type name for these bacteria..keeping in mind..their ability to ‘endure’ acid.
