Etymology: Origin unknown.Probably an arbitrary formation. The first element vi- is perhaps influenced by English words such as virile adj., virility n., etc., or their etymon classical Latin vir (see note at man n.¹). According to the makers of the drug, the last two syllables (and first vowel) were not suggested by Niagara n., as sometimes proposed. A phonetic similarity to Sanskrit vy-agra ‘excited, agitated’ and vyāghra ‘tiger’ has also been noted, but these words seem unlikely to have influenced the formation.

Pharmacology.

A proprietary name for: the drug sildenafil citrate, given orally in the treatment of male impotence. Also figurative.
