Its origins lie in Spain, home of the flat-backed vihuela de mano, the five- or later six-stringed guitar. This instrument was held and played much like the plectrum guitar of the present day; the cross-fertilization consisted in applying to it a playing technique..associated with..the fiddles... The result was the vihuela de arco (‘bowed’ vihuela), which was to become known..as the viol.
