Etymology: < Old French burel (now bureau ), a kind of cloth, diminutive of bure , feminine ‘coarse (? brown) woollen cloth, bay, baize’, of uncertain origin, referred by Diez, Littré, and others to an adjective which appears in Old French as buire ‘dark brown’ < late Latin *burreus , *burrius , < Latin burrus red, commonly taken as < Greek πυῤῥός red. Cognate words to French bure , buire , are Lombard bur , Italian bujo dark; to burel , Spanish buriel , Provençal burel , red-brown; also Spanish buriel , Portuguese burel , Provençal burel , coarse woollen cloth. See bureau n.
Obsolete exc. Historical.
A coarse woollen cloth (probably originally of brown colour: cf. baize n.); frieze; a garment of this fabric; (plain) clothing.
