Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bum v.2, bee n.1
Etymology: < bum v.2 + bee n.1 Compare earlier bumblebee n.In sense 2 translating French bombies, plural (1559 in the passage translated in quot. 1653 at sense 2, of uncertain sense and origin), and perhaps showing a punning use of the insect name suggested by the folk etymological derivation of myrmidon from ancient Greek μύρμηξ ant (see discussion at myrmidon n.).
Chiefly Scottish.
1. A bumblebee.In quot. 1605 with reference to a special relationship existing between bees and the soul, which is suggested in a number of ancient Greek texts.
