Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Italian bombo, a child's word for drink (1st half of the 15th cent.), of imitative origin (compare bum n.2).
Now chiefly historical.
An alcoholic drink made from spirits (originally rum), sugar, and water, often with additional flavourings such as fruits and spices.Originally as a drink of sailors; cf. grog n. 1a.

Forms: 1800s– bumbo, 1800s– bungo, 1900s bungbo.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Krio. Partly a borrowing from Temne. Etymons: Krio gbongbo; Temne -gboŋgbo.
Etymology: < (i) Krio gbongbo and its etymon (ii) Temne -gboŋgbo (with class prefix ka-gboŋgbo, denoting the tree).Some of the forms may be the result of mishearing of the doubly-articulated voiced labial-velar plosive (represented by the orthographic sequence gb in Temne and Krio) as either g or b.
More fully bumbo tree (usually in form bungo tree). A large leguminous tree, Daniellia thurifera, native to tropical West Africa, valued for its aromatic timber and gum or resin. Also: gum or resin obtained from this tree.
