Etymology: Apparently representing Old English wyrtwala weak masculine, -walu strong feminine, root, corresponding to Old High German wurzala ( < *wurzwala) modern German wurzel (feminine), Middle Dutch wortele, modern Dutch wortel. In the sense of ‘root’ the word did not survive into Middle English, being superseded by the shorter Scandinavian synonym (see root n.¹). The sense ‘agnail’ is not recorded in Old English, but is paralleled by the German dialect neidwurzel, a synonym of neidnagel agnail.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈwartwale.
