单词 wayleet
释义

wayleetn.

Forms:

α. Old English wegelæte, Old English weggelæte, early Middle English wegelete (in surname), early Middle English woghelete (Kent, in surname), early Middle English wylet (Essex, in surname), Middle English weielot, Middle English weilaite (in copy of Old English charter), Middle English weilete, Middle English weilot, Middle English weylate, Middle English weylete.

β. early Middle English weienlæte (south-west midlands), early Middle English weynleate (south-western), Middle English weonlete (south-west midlands).

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: way n.1, English gelǣte.
Etymology: In α. forms < way n.1 + Old English gelǣte coming together, meeting, junction (see leet n.1); in Middle English partly also showing the reflex of Old English wega , genitive plural of way n.1 as the first element (see examples at leet n.1). In β. forms apparently showing the reflex of rare Old English wegena, weak genitive plural of way n.1 as the first element. The Middle English forms also show phonological reduction and loss of the prefix of the second element. In Old English the genitive phrase wega gelǣte (with regular strong genitive plural of the first element) is more frequently attested than the compound weggelǣte . It is also attested once with weak genitive plural of the first element in Northumbrian wegana gelēta (plural). For examples of the phrase see leet n.1 In form woghelete at α. forms the first element is probably the reflex of Old English (Kentish) weoga (genitive plural), showing back mutation, and subsequent development of weo- to wo- . Later variation in the vowel of the second element (e.g. in weielot, weilot at α. forms) apparently reflects a loss of stress.
Obsolete.
