Origin: A borrowing from Ojibwa. Etymon: Ojibwa we'we.

Etymology: < Ojibwa we'we snow goose (especially in its white phase ), cognate with Cree wēhwēw wavey n. Compare earlier wavey n.The English form wawa was apparently introduced or popularized by Longfellow in Song of Hiawatha (compare quot. 1855), who also gives the Ojibwa etymon as wa´wa in the accompanying glossary. The Cree form cited in quot. 1743 is a compound with the word for ‘white’ as its first element, and an animate plural ending.

Chiefly North American. Now rare.

A North American wild goose; spec. the snow goose, Anser caerulescens, in its white phase. Cf. wavey n.
