Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese bugaku.
Etymology: < Japanese bugaku (10th cent.; 1603 as bugacu in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < bu dance ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese ) + -gaku music ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese yuè).
A classical dance style of Japan, characterized by highly stylized, restrained movements made by performers wearing elaborate costumes and sometimes using masks and hand-held props. Also: the genre of music which accompanies this (cf. gagaku n.). Frequently (and in earliest use) attributive.
