单词 wiedemann–franz
释义

Wiedemann–Franzn.

Brit. /ˌviːdəmənˈfrants/, U.S. /ˌvidəmənˈfrænts/, /ˌvidəmənˈfrɑnts/
Forms: 1900s– Wiedemann–Frantz (nonstandard), 1900s– Wiedemann–Franz.
Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names Gustav Heinrich Wiedemann, Rudolph Franz.
Etymology: < the names of Gustav Heinrich Wiedemann (1826–99) and Rudolph Franz (1826–1902), German physicists, who published the law in 1853 ( Ann. d. Physik 89 497).With Wiedemann–Franz law compare German Wiedemann-Franzsches Gesetz (1874 or earlier).
Physics.
Used as a modifier. Designating or relating to the law that the ratio of the thermal conductivity of a metal to its electrical conductivity is proportional to its temperature, as in Wiedemann–Franz law, Wiedemann–Franz ratio, etc.More precisely, the Wiedemann–Franz law states that k/ σ = LT, where k is the thermal conductivity of the metal, σ its electrical conductivity, T its temperature, and L a numerical constant known as the Lorentz number.Gustav Wiedemann and Rudolph Franz originally claimed only that the ratio of thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity is constant for different metals at the same temperature. It was Danish physicist Ludvig Lorentz (1829–91) who discovered the proportionality of this ratio to temperature and who first formulated the equation characterizing the law.
