Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish béal bocht.
Etymology: < Irish béal bocht (1916 or earlier) < béal mouth (Early Irish bél ; of uncertain origin) + bocht poor, unfortunate (Early Irish bocht : see note), perhaps after English poor mouth (in to make a poor mouth at mouth n. Phrases 1k) and poor-mouth n. (compare uses in phrases in Irish, as béal bocht a dhéanamh, literally ‘to make a poor mouth’, chuir sé béal bocht air he put on a poor mouth, literally ‘he put a poor mouth on him’).Popularized by the satirical Irish-language novel An Béal Bocht (1941) by Brian O'Nolan (writing as ‘Myles na gCopaleen’, but cited as ‘Flann O'Brien’ in the 1973 translation). Further etymology of Irish bocht. Early Irish bocht is < the Celtic base of boingid breaks (further etymology uncertain and disputed) + a Celtic suffix forming past participles, cognate with the Germanic base of -ed suffix1.
