Etymology: < Boeotia (classical Latin Boeōtia, ancient Greek Βοιωτία), the name of a district in ancient Greece, whose inhabitants were proverbial for their stupidity.Although Boeotia was the birthplace of celebrated writers including Hesiod, Pindar, and Plutarch, its people were generally regarded in antiquity as dull, crude, and gluttonous.
