单词 | winter-close |
释义 | winter-closev. Explained by N.E.D. (1926) as a compound verb with the sense ‘to shut close against the cold of winter’, an interpretation probably suggested by the lack of a space between the two elements in the manuscript, but more likely to be winter used as an adverb (with the sense ‘in winter’) followed by the simple verb close, reflecting the underlying Latin phrase, lit. ‘closed during winter’.
