Etymology: Old English wisnian, weosnian (also áwisnian, forwisnian) = Old High German wesanên, -(e)nên, also ar-, ir-, firwesenên, Old Norse visna (Swedish vissna, Danish visne); compare Old Norse visinn (Swedish, Danish vissen) withered, palsied: < Germanic wis-, whence also Middle High German wesel weak, perished; compare Lithuanian výsti to wither, Latin viēscere to wither, Welsh gwyw ( < *wiswo-) withered, Old Irish feugud ‘marcor’.
1. intransitive. Of plants: To dry up, shrivel, wither. Also transferred of persons, their features, etc. See also wizened adj.
