单词 calamint
释义

calamintn.

Brit. /ˈkaləmɪnt/, U.S. /ˈkæləˌmɪnt/
Forms: Middle English–1600s calament, Middle English–1500s calamynt(e, 1500s calamenthe, 1600s calaminth, 1700s calemint, 1500s– calamint.
Etymology: Middle English calament, < French calament (14th cent. in Littré), medieval Latin calamentum, < Latin calaminthe, < Greek καλαμίνθη, καλάμινθος, applied to the same or some similar plant. The Greek is explained < καλός beautiful + μίνθη, μίνθος mint: but this is perhaps only popular etymology. The English word was subsequently assimilated to the Latin form, and to mint.
A genus of aromatic herbs, Calamintha (family Labiatæ), including the Common Calamint ( C. officinalis), formerly in repute for its medicinal virtues, Lesser Calamint ( C. Nepeta), Wood Calamint ( C. sylvatica), and several other species.
