单词 worldriche
释义

worldrichen.

Forms:

α. See world n. and -ric suffix.

β. Middle English worldesriche.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: world n., riche n.
Etymology: In α. forms cognate with or formed similarly to Dutch wereldrijk large kingdom, empire (1740 or earlier), Old Saxon weroldrīki kingdom of the world (as opposed to heaven), large kingdom, Old High German weraltrīhhi kingdom of the world (German Weltreich , now only in sense ‘large kingdom, empire’) < the Germanic base of world n. + the Germanic base of -ric suffix. In β. forms < the genitive of world n. + riche n.; compare Old Icelandic veraldarríki worldly power, Old Swedish värulds rike the kingdom of the world (as opposed to heaven), Danish verdensrige large kingdom, empire (18th cent.). Compare heavenriche n.In Middle English (in α. forms) recorded predominantly in Laȝamon, where forms with final -e in the first element may show either attributive use of a disyllabic stem form or the reflex of the Old English strong feminine genitive form worulde.
