Etymology: Old English gieddian , < giedd (see yed n.), ? < root gad- to put together, as in gather v., together adv., prep., n., and adj. For the development of sense 2 compare Old English gieddum wrixlan to dispute, and the use of the verb in Daniel 728.
Now Scottish.
