Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Partly a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Hebrew yĕšīḇāh; Yiddish yeshive.
Etymology: Partly < post-biblical Hebrew yĕšīḇāh (see below), and partly (in later use, especially in the γ. forms) < Yiddish yeshive < post-biblical Hebrew yĕšīḇāh session, (hence) place of learning, academy (Mishnah) < yāšaḇ to sit.The β. forms reflect an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew noun; the γ. forms are < Yiddish only. In plural form yeshivot after the Hebrew plural form. The plural form yesibots shows double marking.

A Jewish school or college devoted to the study of Talmudic and rabbinical writings and traditionally attended by boys and men only. Also (in later use): a Jewish elementary or secondary school.
