Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with Old Dutch gifallan to fall (Middle Dutch, Dutch gevallen to fall, to collapse, to expire, to happen, to fall to someone, to be pleasing), Middle Low German gevallen to fall, to surrender, to happen, to be due, to fall to someone, to be pleasing, Old High German gifallan to fall, to collapse, to die, be killed, to defect, to happen upon, to sink, to decline, to fall to someone, to be fitting (Middle High German gevallen to happen, to fall to someone, to be pleasing, German gefallen to be pleasing) < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Germanic base of fall v.In Old English a strong verb of Class VII. The verb is chiefly intransitive, but transitive use is occasionally found; compare quot. OE1 at sense 1. It is unclear whether Old English and Middle English prefixed past participle forms represent the prefixed or the unprefixed verb, i.e. fall v. or yfall v., as formally they may belong to either. Due to the comparative rarity of the prefixed verb, instances and forms of the prefixed past participle have been covered at fall v. In Old English occasional forms with double prefixation are attested (chiefly as element-by-element glosses of Latin), as ingefeallan to fall into (compare in- prefix1), ongefeallan to fall on (compare on- prefix).
Obsolete.
1. intransitive. To descend or drop; to collapse; to fall down. Also figurative. In quot. OE1 transitive: to fall on (the ground).
