Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French affermeur ; affirm v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Middle French affermeur person who affirms (something) (13th cent. in Old French; < affermer affirm v. + -eur -eur suffix); and partly (ii) < affirm v. + -er suffix1.With the form affermour compare -our suffix.
A person who affirms something; a person who declares or maintains the truth of something, esp. something disputed or denied. Also (in early use): a person who confirms or vouches for the truth or validity of something.
