Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French canapé.
Etymology: < French canapé sofa (1648), hence (on account of its resemblance to a sofa with a person sitting on it) piece of bread topped with savoury food (not securely attested in this sense in French until later than in English: 1787), specific senses of canapé canopy n.
1. A bite-sized item of food consisting of a small piece of bread, pastry, etc., with a savoury topping, served in batches as appetizers or (now typically) with drinks at receptions or formal parties; (also) the piece of bread, pastry, etc., forming the base of such an item. Later also more generally: any small item of food served in this way.
