Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin canariensis.
Etymology: Apparently < scientific Latin canariensis, specific name (1753 or earlier; 1857 or earlier in Tropaeolum canariensis , a former systematic name of this plant) < post-classical Latin Canaria (see Canary n.1) + classical Latin -ēnsis -ese suffix.
Now rare.
The canary creeper, Tropaeolum peregrinum.
