agaritan.

Brit. /ˌaɡəˈriːtə/, U.S. /ˌɑɡəˈridə/
Forms:

γ. 1800s– agrito.

Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish agarita, agrito.
Etymology: < American Spanish (Mexico and southern U. S.) agarita, algarita, algerita, variants (apparently with epenthetic vowels, and, in α. forms, additionally with alteration after Spanish words beginning with al- ) of Spanish agrito barberry ( Berberis vulgaris) (1857 or earlier; compare Mexican Spanish agritos (plural noun) sorrel (1856 or earlier)), probably < agrio sour (see below) + -ito -et suffix1. In γ. forms directly < Spanish agrito. Compare also American Spanish agrillo, denoting (in Mexico) a kind of barberry, (in El Salvador) a kind of wood sorrel (1942; earlier in sense ‘slightly sour taste’ (1590)).Spanish agrio (c1440) is ultimately < classical Latin ācer sour (see acrid adj.), but shows alteration of the ending; the regular Spanish reflex of the classical Latin adjective was agro (a1250), which is now regional. American Spanish agrillo shows a use as noun of agrillo slightly sour (first half of the 14th cent.; < agrio sour, acrid + -illo , diminutive suffix: compare -illa suffix).
U.S. regional (south-western).
An evergreen barberry, Mahonia trifoliata (family Berberidaceae), of the south-western United States and Mexico, having greyish, sharply pointed trifoliate leaves, clusters of yellow flowers, and bright red edible berries; the berry itself, which is sharp-tasting and used esp. for making preserves. Also: any of several similar plants of the genera Mahonia or Berberis (rare). The status of the genus Mahonia is disputed, with some authors including it in Berberis.
