He was elected president of the African National Congress (ANC) in 2007. During the Apartheid years he was sent to prison for ten years in 1963. He spent this time on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was also kept in prison. He spent long periods during the 1970s and 1980s in exile (=forced to live outside his own country), but returned to South Africa in 1990. |
