ADAM1bba11

ADAM1bba11

A member of the ADAMs protein family, which is encoded by ADAM11 on chromosome 17q21.3, and has a molecular profile distinct from other ADAMs, in that (1) sequence data suggest that it is not a metalloprotease as it lacks a catalytic motif, (2) its zinc-binding motif, which is critical for proteinase activity, is disrupted in its metalloproteinase-like domain, and (3) it lacks an RDG sequence, which is present in other members of the ADAMs family. ADAM 11 was first identified as a candidate tumour suppressor gene for breast cancer. It is expressed widely especially in the brain. ADAM11 knock out mice lack histologic changes in the brain or spinal cord, but are clumsy and slow learners.
