Guker Island
Guker Island
an island in the northern Arctic Ocean in the southern part of the archipelago Zemlia Frantsa-Iosifa. Area, about 508 sq km; maximum elevation, 576 m. Most of Guker Island is covered with glaciers. In 1913 and 1914, G. Ia. Sedov’s expedition, which was headed for the north pole, wintered on the northwestern part of the island on Tikhaia Bay. The island was named for J. D. Hooker, an English botanist.
