(hĕrtslē`ə), town (1994 pop. 83,800), central Israel, near the Mediterranean Sea. It is a resort with fine beaches, as well as an important electronics center. It was founded in 1924 and named for Theodor HerzlHerzl, Theodor, 1860–1904, Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent for the Vienna Neue Frei Presse, he reported on the Dreyfus affair.
