Hauke, Józef

(pseudonym, Bosak). Born Sept. 19, 1834, in Warsaw; died Jan. 21, 1871. Polish revolutionary.

In 1855, Hauke joined the Russian Army. He retired at the end of 1862 with the rank of colonel. Under the pseudonym Bosak, he led an uprising in the southwestern part of the Kingdom of Poland from the autumn of 1863 to the spring of 1864. After the defeat of the uprising, he joined the revolutionary-democratic wing of the Polish emigration. In the autumn of 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, he joined the Vosges Army, led by G. Garibaldi, that fought on the side of the French. He died in battle at Dijon.
