Igarka

(ēgär`kə), city, NW Siberian Russia, on the lower Yenisei River. It has sawmills and is a major lumber port. Igarka was founded in 1928. During the Stalin period forced labor was used in the area, especially for logging.

a city in Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR, 163 km north of the arctic circle. Igarka is a port on the Enisei River, 673 km from its mouth, and is situated on the right shore of the Igarka channel. The port is open to oceangoing ships. Igarka has water connections (during the summer) and air connections with Krasnoiarsk, which is 1,779 km away. Population, 16,000 (1970). It arose in 1929 as a center of the sawmilling industry and a port for the export of timber to both domestic and foreign ports. It became a city in 1931. The timber and logging combine in Igarka uses raw materials from the entire Enisei River basin. There is also a fish-processing factory in the city. Igarka has a pedagogical school of the peoples of the North and a branch of the Krasnoiarsk polytechnicum.
