Musk Glands

Musk Glands

skin glands that release a highly aromatic substance—musk—in the males of some reptiles and mammals. The odor is chiefly used to attract females and to mark the territory occupied by the animal. Particularly well-developed musk glands are found in crocodiles and tuataras near the lower jaw and cloaca. Some snakes also have well-developed musk glands, which are located near the cloaca only. Among mammals, musk glands are found in the inguinal region of the musk deer, beaver, musk-ox, and others. In the desman, these glands are located on the tail.
